the Lions relied heavily on quarterback Matthew Stafford, turning the offense into a one-dimensional attack.

Offensively, Their rushing attack never ranked above 28th over the past four seasons. Detroit drafted only two running backs since 2014, including Ameer Abdullah in the second round in 2015.

This abysmal rushing attack plagued the team during its Week 16 matchup against the Bengals, averaging only 3.9 yards per carry. The Lions laid an egg against Cincinnati, which ended their playoff hopes.

“We appreciate Jack’s effort in building the foundation of this team for the future. Thank you to Jack, his wife, Linda, and his daughter, Aubrey, for their important contributions to the Raiders and our local community in Oakland. We wish them all the best,” Raiders owner Mark Davis said via the team’s release.

The Raiders went 25-23 during Del Rio’s three-year stint, a roller coaster of a tenure in which Oakland shed its also-ran status for 15 fleeting weeks before sinking back to the deep end of the AFC. His firing comes as a surprise — NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport reported prior to Week 17 that Del Rio’s job was safe for at least one more season.

But other reports surfaced that the Raiders were pursuing Gruden, the Monday Night Football analyst and former Raiders and Buccaneers head coach, to replace Del Rio. Gruden was Oakland’s head coach from 1998 through 2001 and led the team to a 40-28 record before being traded to the Buccaneers prior to the 2002 season. Gruden took the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl win over the Raiders following the 2002 season.

The Eagles have a top-notch rush defense but are suspect in the back end, especially evident as the season went on.

“I honestly don’t think it’s a about race, it’s about capital and opportunity,” Lanier said. “We came very close to Reggie Fowler becoming the Minnesota Vikings owner a few years ago. There are only 32 of these. They do not often become available. I believe, I know, there are people, individuals in this league who instigate change. I was the first African-American middle linebacker in the league (1967 with the Kansas City Chiefs). I am a product of change of thought. People like Al Davis and Lamar Hunt laid the foundation for inclusive thinking and we’ve seen it applied among head coaches, assistants and front office personnel.”

They allowed Eli Manning and four backup wide receivers to pile up over 400 yards of passing. They got beat on a sweet double move against the Raiders for a touchdown on Monday Night Football. The Eagles will try shutting down the Falcons run game, because that is what they do. That’s why Ryan needs to have a connection with Jones to win this game.

The Titans are major underdogs in New England this weekend. If they want to win, they need to hit Tom Brady. Brady has been hit at nearly a career-high rate this season. Last season, his sack percentage was just 3.4 percent. This season, he’s been sacked on 5.7 percent of his plays.

The Titans will need a HUGE game from Jurrell Casey, their stud defensive tackle. Getting pressure up the middle is always the way to go with Brady. Casey will have to win one-on-one battles, and the Titans defensive coordinator, the famed Dick LeBeau, will have to scheme up ways to get Casey great matchups.

The Eagles weren’t favored to win with Nick Foles under center, but when time expired, Philadelphia came out on top.

The most obvious storyline heading into this one was Foles starting in place of Carson Wentz, who tore his ACL in Week 14. But the Eagles finished the regular season with the third-best run game in the NFL. The ground game had some momentum in the first half, but the Falcons slowed them down, holding the Eagles to 96 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

Philadelphia opened things up with the run/pass option in the second half, and it took advantage of the fact that the Falcons expected them to run it. Foles had some errant throws, but finished with a respectable 246 yards on 23-of-30 passing with no picks.

Second-year quarterback Carson Wentz took the NFL by storm this season. He was in line to win the MVP before injuring his ACL in Week 14 against the Rams. Wentz was completing 60 percent of his passes, with 33 touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a passer rating of 101.9 before getting injured. He added the ability of pocket movement and creating outside the structure of the play to lead this offense. Wentz had the benefit of an outstanding offensive line and running game to help a top-five offense score points.bears_015-223x223

Everyone knows that Vikings fans hate the Packers.

They don’t care for the Bears or the Lions, either. But what may surprise you is that Minnesota fans carry the same level of loathing for the New Orleans Saints as they do for teams in their own division.

Buccaneers rode out the storm just fine. On Tuesday, when Dirk Koetter convened his team at 6 p.m. ET, 63 of the Bucs’ 64 players (53 on the active roster, 11 on the practice squad) followed along as their head coach delivered a direct message: No one would be feeling sorry for the Bucs. What was left unsaid was that it was a borderline miracle that practically the whole team made it (the one tardy player had a drive that wound up taking 16 hours) there in time to hear it.

The Jaguars have stymied opponents all year, but when they face one of the league’s best offenses this week, where are the points coming from? That’s the big mystery Doug Marrone must solve if his team hopes to make a deep playoff run.

A few minutes before 4 p.m. local time on Sunday, the blue medical tent went up on the Eagles’ sideline at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. This was the clearest sign that something was not right with Carson Wentz.

Vance and I had a great talk this morning about our plan to attack this offseason and get better as a team. We believe in Vance as our head coach. Together, we’ll put in the work to improve in all areas and win in 2018.

Well, when it’s 23 degrees and feels like a million-below, when you have lost three straight games, when you are in a win-and-in or lose-and-go-home regular season finale/bid for the playoffs and when the brute Jacksonville Jaguars are in your grill, there is no room for niceties. Minnesota will travel to Philadelphia for the NFC Championship game next Sunday.

Then the Steelers’ subsequent onside kick attempt was laughably bad. The Jaguars recovered and turned it into a field goal. Roethlisberger connected with JuJu Smith-Schuster with a second remaining to get within three of the Jags, but it was too late. The Jaguars won to advance next week.

In the NFC, the Vikings pulled out a miracle win at the last second against the Saints.

Super Bowl 52 kicks off on Sunday, Feb. 4 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Here’s where the bracket currently stands.

First, the rise of the spread offense in college has made it so the sure-thing left tackle prospect—one of the safest bets in the draft as recently as a decade ago (Jonathan Ogden, Joe Thomas, etc.)—is borderline extinct, with busts like ex-Ram Greg Robinson and ex-Jaguar Luke Joeckel proof of it. Second, the practice rules have wreaked havoc on the ability of coaches to raise the players once they’re pros, and the issue is particularly glaring with backups, who can’t hit much during the season (only 14 in-season full-pad practices are allowed) and aren’t getting any game action because offensive linemen don’t rotate like defensive linemen do. So in general, it’s become harder to draft them, and harder to develop them, and that led to a whole mess of ugly offensive football on Sunday.

Lattimore’s dilemma (he ended up using his mom’s Sunday Ticket account) is one born of the current, complex and crowded television landscape. On-demand platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu are taking viewers away from traditional cable. That, combined with an influx of new ways to watch NFL games, are taking a chunk out of network viewership.

According to Nielsen, through Week 15 NFL ratings this season are down 8% from 2016, with an average of 15 million viewers each week compared with 16.3 million viewers at this time in 2016. When you take into account the ratings drop across all television programming, the numbers are less alarming—broadcast primetime television audiences for the four major networks are down 9% from 2016.

Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, another good player to have behind your back, was also glad that Koetter’s getting another chance.

“It’s excellent,” he said. “The whole getting a new head coach and all those different things, I have been through it too many times and I wasn’t looking forward to doing it again. So I am glad the Glazers decided to keep him around. I am happy. I love Coach and I’m excited for the future.”

LeSean McCoy will play with sprained ankle against Jaguars in the Wild Card round

The Buffalo Bills will play in their first playoff game since 2000, and running back LeSean McCoy will not miss out on it. McCoy, who suffered a sprained ankle against the Dolphins in Week 17, will play against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card Round, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

McCoy is now ready to play against Jacksonville, despite being listed as questionable this week. Friday was his only day at practice, where he was was limited.

Why is this important? McCoy, 29, is the heart and soul of the offense. Buffalo finished the regular season with the sixth-best rushing attack in the NFL. McCoy accumulated 1,138 rushing yards and six touchdowns this season. McCoy’s presence would help take some pressure off quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

Jacksonville’s second-ranked defense is the best at defending the pass but 21st against the run. Buffalo must run the ball to have a chance at upsetting the Jaguars. McCoy should have a huge workload in this game.

The Eagles started the NFL action Saturday by shutting down the Atlanta Falcons offense and doing just enough offensively to pick up a 15-10 win. The Falcons had one last chance at a touchdown, but the Eagles forced a turnover on downs nearly on the goal line with less than a minute left to put the game on ice.

New England’s win was much less stressful for the home fans with the Patriots cruising through the Tennessee Titans for a 35-14 win. Tennessee scored first, but James White gave the Patriots an early lead with two rushing touchdowns and it was all New England from there.

Both the Eagles and Patriots will host the conference championship games next week, but will have to wait until Sunday to find out their opponents. Philadelphia will face the winner of a matchup between the New Orleans Saints and Minnesota Vikings, while the Patriots will take on the winner of a game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburgh Steelers.
